Getting paid by streaming
A stream is not a sale. Subscriptions go into a pool, the platform takes its share, and what is left is divided by every play on the service that month. Your song is competing for a slice of that pool with everything else released that day.
So the rate is not yours to set, it moves month to month, and it falls as the catalogue grows. A listener can love a track, play it a hundred times, and it still rounds to nothing you can plan around.
A direct sale skips the pool. One listener, one price you chose, once.
Questions artists ask first.
Does urTrax replace my distributor?
No. urTrax is a direct sales channel that runs alongside whatever distribution you already use. Nothing about joining requires you to change or cancel a distributor agreement.
Can I remain on Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp?
Yes. Participation is nonexclusive. Keep every platform and storefront you are on today.
Who owns my music?
You do. Uploading to urTrax does not transfer ownership of your masters or compositions. You grant urTrax the licence it needs to host, stream previews of, and sell your music on the platform. See the Artist and Seller Terms for the exact scope.
What does urTrax charge?
Nothing on a sale. The urTrax platform fee is 0%, so you keep 100% of what a fan pays for your music or merch. There is no separate seller subscription. urTrax is funded by fan memberships instead.
Do payment-processing fees come out of my sale?
No. urTrax pays Stripe's processing costs out of fan membership revenue, not out of your sale. Nothing is deducted from the sale price, so 100% is what reaches you. Taxes are still yours, and a refunded or charged-back sale is reversed along with the proceeds from it.
How do payouts work?
Payouts are processed through Stripe. Timing depends on account status, location, payment method, settlement requirements and Stripe availability. You complete Stripe onboarding before your first transfer, and your Studio shows a ledger of what has settled and what is pending.
Do I need a paid fan account to sell music?
An artist account starts on the same terms as a fan account: $1.99 for the first 30 days, then $2.99 every 30 days for continued access to the urTrax app. Selling itself carries no additional seller subscription.
What formats can I upload?
Upload the audio files your release is mastered to through the Studio release flow. The uploader validates each file and tells you if a format is rejected before you publish.
Can I remove a release?
Yes. You can unpublish a release from your Studio at any time, which removes it from your public profile and the Underground.
What happens to completed fan purchases if a release is removed?
Purchases already completed stay with the buyer. Unpublishing stops future sales; it does not retroactively remove music from the collection of someone who paid for it.
How are refunds and chargebacks handled?
Refunds and chargebacks are processed through Stripe and are deducted from your proceeds, which can produce a negative balance that offsets future sales. The Artist and Seller Terms set out how disputes and negative balances are handled.
Is radio placement guaranteed?
Yes. Once you mark a song as available for radio, Taelor makes sure it gets radio time, on equal footing with every other artist.
How does urTrax make money if it takes nothing from my sales?
Fan memberships. Listeners pay $1.99 for their first 30 days and $2.99 every 30 days after that, and that revenue funds the product, discovery, radio, Taelor and the payment processing on your sales. The point of the model is that the platform is paid for by the people using it rather than by taxing the people making the music.
